Remembering Lisa Niland with Memorial Cup Launch

On Wednesday evening last, close to 120 people gathered in St Attracta’s Community School as Sligo LGFA officially launched the PPS U – 14 Championship and also it was a night when a new Cup was presented for the Competition. The Cup – The Lisa Niland Memorial Perpetual Cup – presented in memory of the young Curry woman who passed away in January 2017.
The idea, a brain child of a Sligo LGFA Executive member, endorsed by the Niland Family came to fruition in St Attracta’s where Lisa was a student for six years. School Principal, David Mc Evoy acted as MC on the night. The evening opened with Amy Niland – Lisa’s sister – carrying the Cup into the crowded room. Mr McEvoy spoke of Lisa’s involvement in the school over the period. John Niland, Lisa’s uncle and well known referee spoke on behalf of the Niland Family, thanking Sligo LGFA and St Attracta’s for their work to date and looking forward to seeing Lisa’s memory being remembered in the years ahead as the schools compete in the Competition.
Sligo Co Board Treasurer, Martin Seery spoke on behalf of the Co Board advising that the Co Board were honoured and delighted that the Niland Family had allowed Lisa’s name to be used on one of their Competitions and in particular the PPS Competition. He also thanked St Attracta’s for hosting the Launch and looked forward to the School competing for the Cup and in keeping Lisa’s memory alive in the years ahead.
Following the speakers, the Lisa Niland Memorial Perpetual Cup was presented to Sligo LGFA Co Board Chairperson Keith Gilroy by the Niland Family. On behalf of the Co Board, Keith Gilroy presented a plaque to St Attracta’s C.S. David McEvoy (Principal) and Anne Brady (Vice Principal) on the occasion of their hosting of the Launch. Other presentations were made by the Co Board to both David and Anne for their work on the Launch. Keith Gilroy also presented a bouquet of flowers (compliments of Guns & Roses and Bonanza, Tubbercurry) to Angela Niland.
Parish priest in Curry Fr Leo Henry performed a blessing on the Cup after which there was time for photos and refreshments and a social chat. Sligo LGFA Co Board wishes to thank all who helped make the evening the success it was. The Finals are penciled in for Tuesday 15th May and Wednesday 16 May with the Lisa Niland Memorial Perputal Cup being played for on Wednesday 16 May, a date that should have been Lisa’s 21st Birthday.
